Universal Records, Inc. was first established as WEA Records
( Philippines ) in 1977. After fifteen years of successful
partnership with WEA Records International, the foreign
licensor decided to put up its own representative office
here.
On July 1992, the record company adopted a new name
and thus, Universal Records was born. The company has since
risen to become one of the leading record labels in the
local music industry. For several years, it was the exclusive
licensee of Zomba Records. It successfully marketed its
frontline artists, including the Backstreet Boys, Britney
Spears, NSync and Steps - all of which achieved multi-platinum
status. Currently, Universal Records holds the exclusive
licensing rights to V2 Records, Beggars Banquet, Avex Trax,
edel Records, Pony Canyon and Koch Records among others - covering
various genres of music from dance, mainstream pop and
R&B to jazz, indie, alternative, new age and lounge.
For its domestic lineup, Universal Records boasts some
of the local industry's luminaries. Among them are Gary
Valenciano, Jose Mari Chan, the Apo Hiking Society and
Parokya Ni Edgar. In the last two years, Universal Records
has launched a few of the most promising solo artists including
Jay R and Jed Madela, plus bands like Orange and Lemons,
Itchyworms and Kamikazee.
For the succeeding years, Universal
Records is determined to further its commitment to its
international and domestic artists. It would also continuously
seek out new talents, explore new opportunities, and would
always endeavor to be a formidable force in the Philippine
music industry. Watch out for yet another set of emerging
talents from Universal Records.
